Bond Approval May Mean New School Next Year

The Lancaster School District may open its first new school by July 2000, thanks to the overwhelming approval of Measure A in Tuesday’s election.

The bidding process, which has already been opened for Amargosa Creek Middle School, is expected to close in four weeks, said Ned McNabb, district assistant superintendent of business services.

The modernization of seven existing schools is scheduled to be completed within three years, he said.

“They are basically full speed ahead right now,” McNabb said.

Semiofficial results show that in an 18% turnout, with some absentee ballots still to be counted, 77% of the voters said yes to Measure A, a $29-million bond issue to repair and rehabilitate district schools and alleviate overcrowding.

Approval of the measure qualifies the district for matching state funds under Proposition 1A, approved by voters in November.

McNabb was extremely pleased with the election results, he said.

“It’s a signature of a community that loves its children. I know it sounds corny, but it’s true.”
