Ruling Party Will Vote for Candidate

Mexico’s Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, said it will elect its candidate for the 2000 presidential race in a primary. It will be the first time the PRI, in power for seven decades, has chosen its candidate through an election. In the past, the president named his successor, and party members automatically fell into line. President Ernesto Zedillo, keen to foster more openness in political life, has said he will not handpick his successor, opening the way for the PRI presidential primaries.
