Trojans Trying to Avoid Traps

The Trojans expect to face some defensive heat when they travel to the desert to play No. 13 Arizona tonight.

“I’m sure they think they are more talented than us,” Coach Henry Bibby said. “And they probably play better when they are running and they’re gambling on defense.”

That means man-to-man and full-court traps, anything to increase the advantage of playing at McKale Center, perhaps the most fearsome court for visiting teams in the Pacific 10. The Wildcats have won 30 in a row at home.

Center Brian Scalabrine was named Pacific 10 newcomer of the year. The 6-foot-9 junior college transfer leads the Trojans with an average of 14.9 points and 6.5 rebounds.

Scalabrine resumed practice Wednesday after recovering from what team doctors said was either flu or food poisoning.

Coming up: Saturday at Arizona State.
