* Volunteer counselors are needed by the San Fernando Valley Counseling Center. Participants will counsel individuals, couples, families and children. A mental-health professional will train applicants at the counseling center at 8350 Reseda Blvd., Northridge; five months of training for four to six hours a week begins in early May. * Goodwill Industries of Southern California is seeking people to sort, price and inventory books for its semiannual Gently Read Book Sale on April 24-25 at the UCLA/Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. * The Volunteer Center Assistance League of Southern California needs tutors for first- though third-graders on weekday mornings at Coldwater Canyon Avenue Elementary in North Hollywood and three schools in Van Nuys: Cohasset Street Elementary, Erwin Street Elementary and Kittridge Street Elementary. Training is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. at the volunteer center at 8134 Van Nuys Blvd., Suite 200, Panorama City. The center is also seeking volunteers to register voters at the campaign office of Los Angeles City Council 7th District candidate Connie Acebo Rodriguez at 1161A N. Maclay St., San Fernando.
