White House Wants Food Handling Tips

The Clinton administration urged a federal panel to add food safety tips to the widely used dietary guidelines, saying that, after years of advising Americans on what to eat, it’s time to explain how to handle food. “Government has an obligation to help people protect themselves,” said Catherine Woteki, the Agriculture Department’s undersecretary for food safety. The guidelines--amended every five years--have never covered food safety, but times have changed since the early 1980s, when they began.
