Cambodia Charges Khmer Rouge Leader
Cambodia brought charges against Khmer Rouge chief Ta Mok today, making him the first member of the murderous leftist group set to answer directly for the deaths of more than 1 million of his countrymen.
Thought to be one of the Khmer Rouge’s most brutal cadres, the man they called “The Butcher” will be charged under a 1994 law banning the radical group, a military court prosecutor said.
The one-legged Ta Mok, 72, was arrested on northern Cambodia’s border with Thailand on Saturday.
The charges cast more doubt on the prospects of Ta Mok and his comrades, all of whom have now surrendered, standing trial before an international tribunal.
