U.S. Jets Bomb Antiaircraft Sites
U.S. warplanes patrolling a Western-imposed “no-fly” zone over northern Iraq bombed antiaircraft artillery sites after detecting Iraqi radar systems in use, a U.S. Air Force statement said. It said U.S. F-15 fighters responded by dropping 500-pound laser-guided bombs, and a Prowler jet fired antiradiation missiles at several sites north and northwest of Mosul. The almost daily confrontations between U.S and Iraqi forces have created unease in Turkey, whose Incirlik base is home to the U.S. jets. Turkish President Suleyman Demirel said recent U.S. airstrikes that shut down an oil pipeline from Iraq to Turkey were “unacceptable.”
