* Re “Insurers Cut Car Claims in ‘90s, Study Says,” March 10: Are we to understand that any time an industry shows a profit, creates new jobs and contributes to our economy--while lowering consumers’ costs--we need to create a law to stop all that? Californians’ cost for auto insurance is the lowest it has been in years, specifically because the state Supreme Court observed that allowing non-policyholders to sue insurance companies over the handling of claims was only benefiting personal injury lawyers. While the lawyers got rich, consumers saw their cost of insurance rising every year. Meanwhile, our court system was buried in excessive, frivolous and costly litigation.

California’s personal injury lawyers have sponsored legislation that would once again allow this abuse of the system. If they are successful, we will pay higher insurance rates while the personal injury lawyers laugh all the way to the bank.
