28 New Officers Complete Training

Twenty-eight new police officers completed training Wednesday with their graduation from the Ventura County Criminal Justice Training Center in Camarillo.

The commencement exercise culminated six months of full-time training, during which officers learn the basics of police work.

“It’s very difficult to get all the way through,” said Capt. Linda Oksner, who directs the training center. She said the attrition rate can be as high as 50%.

The graduates will head to the Oxnard Police Department and Ventura and Santa Barbara county sheriff’s departments. All had worked in each of the departments previously as civilian employees.

Training includes the basic fundamentals of law enforcement, including how to pull over motorists, conduct a search and interview suspects and victims.

“It’s just the foundational work for a law enforcement career. Any law enforcement officer will tell you, you learn something new every day,” Oksner said. “It’s not in an academy environment. You learn from your mistakes; you learn from your success. I think it’s like life.”

A new class of cadets begins Monday.
