Inglewood Joins Fight Against LAX Expansion
The city has added its name to the growing list of communities objecting to the proposed expansion of Los Angeles International Airport.
In a resolution adopted last week, the City Council and Mayor Roosevelt Dorn said they want the city of Los Angeles, which owns and operates the airport, to spend at least $25 million a year to mitigate the increased noise, traffic, air pollution and other problems an expanded airport would bring.
“The city of Inglewood is disproportionately impacted by aircraft noise and overflights,” Dorn said, adding that 90% of 1,000 planes arriving at the airport each day descend over his city on their final runway approach.
The Inglewood resolution said the city will support the proposed expansion once the mitigation efforts are addressed and provided “expansion or growth will not result in any additional flights” over the city.
Other communities near the airport, including El Segundo along the airport’s southern boundary, have opposed expansion and are pushing for development at other airports to meet increasing passenger and cargo service demands.
