Center to Help Applicants Find Scholarships, Jobs

Share

A self-help information center geared toward college scholarship applicants and job seekers is scheduled to open today.

Named after Sylvia Thomas, City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas’ late grandmother, the resource center will feature computers equipped with a reference library with access to a social service directory and literacy programs, said Sylvia Castillo, associate director of the Community Coalition, a South-Central nonprofit organization.

“We feel that our most valuable resource is our people,” Castillo said. “We need to line them up to knowledge and information, to get them connected to the Internet.”

The directory will alert employment seekers to job openings and link them to skills centers and child care, Castillo said.

The grand opening will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Community Coalition’s headquarters, 8101 S. Vermont Ave.
