More Proof Found of Pinochet Crimes

From Times Wire Reports

The Spanish judge seeking the extradition of Chile’s Augusto Pinochet said he had proof of more than 40 cases of torture and assassination against the former dictator since 1988. Judge Baltasar Garzon, who ordered Pinochet’s arrest in London last October, issued a court document saying he had evidence of 33 new cases of torture and murder during Pinochet’s rule after 1988 to add to previously existing cases. Britain’s Law Lords have ruled that while Pinochet’s arrest was legal, he was not answerable to human rights abuses before 1988, the year a U.N. convention on torture became part of British law. The papers were sent to Britain to give additional information to the government, which must decide whether extradition is possible.
