Dramatic Gestures

A self-confessed pack rat, Illeana Douglas admits to having a closet jammed with vintage clothes and a weakness for flea markets. “When I was young, I would emulate Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O.,then I went through my Joan Crawford phase, and when I saw ‘Bonnie & Clyde,’ I started wearing a beret,” says the actress, whose mother was a Simplicity pattern model in the ‘50s. “When I’m doing a movie I’ll call her--she kept everything--and in almost every movie I wear things of hers.” Indeed, her mother’s hand-me-downs inspired the outfits she wears in her next two projects. For the ghost story “A Stir of Echoes,” due out this fall, in which she acts opposite Kevin Bacon, Douglas helped create a “gypsy witch look”: denim maxi skirt and an Indian top with elephant print. In the upcoming “Happy Texas,” with William H. Macy, Jeremy Northam and Steve Zahn, she plays a woman who falls for a convict. “It’s a wacky comedy of errors,” she says. In it she wears a plaid and red dress borrowed from Mom. She says it’s just perfect for a movie set in “the land of big hair, big clothes and beauty pageants.”
