TV Sleuth Explores a Smaller Home
Veteran actor-singer Hal Linden and his wife, Frances, have sold their Brentwood home of 20 years for $3 million.
The Emmy- and Tony-winning Linden, in his 60s, has appeared in more than a dozen Broadway shows and starred in the ABC series “Barney Miller” (1975-82) and “Jack’s Place” (1992-93) as well as the CBS sitcom “The Boys Are Back” (1994-95). In April, he co-starred with James Garner in the CBS movie “The Rockford Files: If It Bleeds . . . It Leads.”
Linden, a National Jewish Fund spokesman, will receive the 1999 Burning Bush Award of the University Women of the University of Judaism on Wednesday in Bel-Air.
He and his wife, married for 40 years, moved to a smaller home in Santa Monica. They also have a place in La Quinta, in Riverside County. The home they sold has a 4,400-square-foot main house, a one-bedroom guest cottage, a circular drive and a pool.
The home was listed by Penny Lippman, Steve Levbine and Judy Lubin of Hilton & Hyland, Beverly Hills; the buyer, a neighbor, was represented by David Offer of Prudential-John Aaroe & Associates, Brentwood.

Model-actress Rachel Hunter, estranged wife of rock star Rod Stewart, has purchased the Beverly Hills-area home of actor-announcer Shadoe Stevens for about $1.7 million.
Hunter, 29, and Stewart, 54, announced their separation in January after eight years of marriage. Since then, Stewart has been on tour and Hunter finished filming the comedy “Just a Little Harmless Sex,” which is due out in June.
The house she bought is English country style and has five bedrooms in 4,500 square feet. It was built in the ‘50s and later renovated. The 1.2-acre grounds have a pool and a tennis court.
Valerie Fitzgerald of Coldwell Banker-Jon Douglas Co., Beverly Hills, had the listing, other sources said.

Emmy-winning sports interviewer Roy Firestone and his wife, Midori, have purchased an Encino home for just under $1.7 million. They were living in Toluca Lake.
The broadcaster, 44, has interviewed more than 4,000 sports figures during his 14 years at ESPN and has had a second career as a lecturer-impressionist-comedian.
The Firestones bought a modern Mediterranean-style house with five bedrooms, an office-library and a guest house in 9,000 square feet. The home, which has a seven-car garage and a pool, is on 2 acres with valley views.
The seller, an investment banker who had purchased the property in 1992 for more than $2.5 million, was represented by Bill Kennedy, executive director of the Sports & Entertainment Division of Coldwell Banker-Jon Douglas Co., Santa Monica.
