New Margarine Gets FDA Safety Approval

Research about the safety of a margarine that may have a beneficial effect on cholesterol levels has passed a review by the Food and Drug Administration, the federal agency said. The action clears the way for the margarine to be sold in the United States by McNeil Consumers Healthcare. The margarine contains plant stanol ester, a nutrient that the company claims will help consumers manage cholesterol levels. The FDA said it is not endorsing the product or its claims.
