Instead of sleeping in or watching cartoons on Saturday mornings, dozens of middle school students are working on a mural to be displayed next month. The project’s aim is to give students experience with community service and art, as well as to beautify the city, said Gail Reed, La Habra City School District’s director of curriculum and bilingual education. District artist-in-residence Mary Schultz is overseeing the five-week project. The student artists are painting a few square feet of plywood at a time and will hang the completed mural on a wall across from the Children’s Museum in La Habra on June 12.
