Protesters, Police Clash in Capital

Indonesian students clashed with police during protests in Jakarta, the capital, to demand that former President Suharto be prosecuted for corruption. Suharto insists that he did nothing wrong. On the first anniversary of Suharto’s resignation, Jakarta was hit by its worst unrest in months, creating a scene reminiscent of the riots that forced him out of office. Many fear more violence during the campaign for June 7 parliamentary elections.
