The ticker tape rolls across the bottom of the television screen. Headlines trumpet the latest ups and downs of the Dow.

But still many people resist testing the stock market.

To encourage new stock traders, the Channel Islands chapter of the National Assn. of Investors Corp. will hold a free informational workshop on June 1. The “Own Your Share of America” program will provide information about the association and provide basic investment principles to help individuals and groups get started.

“Listen, you can invest in the stock market too,” said Doris Lance, president of Common Cents Investors, a member of the Channel Islands chapter of investor clubs. “The market is there; you don’t have to have lots of money. You don’t need to buy lots of stock. You don’t even need to have a broker. It’s for your future, whether you want to send a child to college, or save money for retirement or a vacation.”

The Channel Islands chapter represents more than 1,700 members and 171 clubs between Santa Barbara and Thousand Oaks. There are 38,000 clubs with 730,000 members nationwide.

“Most beginning investors are intimidated by the market because they don’t understand it,” Lance said. “For someone who is in a learning curve about the stock market, there’s never a bad time to invest, because the opportunity is there to find good, solid companies that have the history of maybe doubling your investment in five years.”

The workshop will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. at the AutoNation conference room, 2001 Lockwood St., Oxnard. For more information call 482-4600.
