The Orange County Hispanic Education Endowment Fund has awarded college scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,500 to 56 students.

“These are some of the finest young minds of their generation,” said Juan Francisco Lara, a local educator who was chairman of the fifth annual scholarship awards ceremony, held Wednesday at UC Irvine. “The way to mark the growth of a community is by its investment in its youth--the future--and this is a community coming of age.”

While most of the students are high-school juniors and seniors, three recipients are studying at Orange County law schools. They are Israel Hernandez-Claustro, Ed Garcia and Yolanda Silvia Pedrego, recipients of the Hispanic Bar Assn./Wally Davis Memorial Legal Scholarship.
