The United States women’s water polo team lost to the Netherlands, 11-8, in the FINA Cup in Winnipeg. The U.S. needed a victory or a tie to advance to the medal round or a victory by Canada over Australia. The Australians defeated Canada, 9-7, sending the U.S. and Canada into the consolation bracket.

A spot in the 2000 Olympics will be awarded to either the U.S. or Canada, whichever finishes higher in the standings. The U.S. defeated Canada Tuesday, but the two could meet again Saturday in the consolation bracket if both win Friday.
