Many Mansions to Offer Summer Camp

A nonprofit organization that helps low-income residents find housing in Thousand Oaks is for the second year offering summer camp for children.

Many Mansions will offer camp to the children who live at the apartments the organization runs.

“It’s something that the kids normally wouldn’t get to do,” said Brandi Harrod, this year’s camp director. “Most of the kids would be stuck in the apartments because their parents work and they don’t want them [the children] to be outside by themselves.”

Last year, the camp was held at the Shadow Hills Apartments on Wilbur Road. A bus shuttled children between Many Mansions’ other five apartment complexes and the camp.

“We saw a real need for the camp. We saw that kids didn’t have anywhere to go,” said Lisa Safaeinili, the group’s resource development director. “The children are already checking to see if the camp will be offered this year.”

Safaeinili said she expects the number of children who will attend this year’s camp to exceed last year’s 300.

For Many Mansions to host a camp, it relies heavily on volunteers and donations.

“The camp runs on what the community gives us. We don’t have a large budget at all,” Harrod said.
