Church Choir Plans ‘Spring Fling’

Oxnard’s All Saints Episcopal Church choir will sponsor a “spring fling” celebration at 7 p.m. today in the parish hall.

Refreshments will be served, and the choir will present Easter and secular music and poetry, along with sing-along selections.

The regular Sunday morning service in Spanish will begin at 9:30 a.m. starting this Sunday.

School Plans Reception for Parents

St. Augustine Academy of Ventura will hold a reception today for parents interested in enrolling their children for the upcoming school year. The reception will be held in Santa Paula, with the curriculum being presented during a social hour.

For the past four years, the academy has operated near Transport and Telephone roads in Ventura, but in 2000, it will move to a location near Wells Road and California 126. The academy educates children from grades four through 12.

Fellowship Offers Special Service

Oxnard’s Channel Islands Vineyard Christian Fellowship offers a worship service especially for 18- to 25-year-olds each Sunday at 7 p.m. The music is contemporary and the dress is casual, says Pastor Bill Coulter.

Sunday morning services are at 9 and 11 a.m.--again, casual dress is welcome.

Rummage Sale to Assist Missions

Mission Circle No. 88 of St. Paschal Baylon Church in Thousand Oaks will hold its annual rummage sale at the church June 5.

The sale will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Profits will benefit the special missions that the circle has adopted in Macao, Guatemala, Malawi and Uganda. Catholic missionaries in these countries help with such basic needs as food, water, hygiene and medical care.

Everything from baby goods to patio accessories, dishes, books and furniture will be offered. Donations may be dropped off at St. Thomas Aquinas Hall at the church, 155 E. Janss Road, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday.

Women’s Conference Scheduled

Sharon Kinney and Dr. Amy Paul of Agoura Hills will be seminar leaders at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints women’s conference June 5 in Newbury Park.

The Relief Society sponsors the annual event, which is free to the public.

Kinney, who has been a fitness advisor to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, will lead a seminar on nutrition and fitness.

Paul will address health needs of today’s women. She recently practiced family medicine in Newbury Park.

“This informal morning setting will enable women to get more health information than they might during a regular office visit with a doctor,” Paul said.

The keynote speaker for the 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. event will be Wendy Watson from Brigham Young University in Utah. Topics such as self-esteem, women’s financial planning and child rearing will be covered.

Church Offers Support Groups

Sonrise Christian Fellowship in Simi Valley offers several ongoing support groups to the public during the week. The meetings are free and child care is available.

A support group for those struggling with co-dependency and for adult children of alcoholics meets Mondays at 7 p.m.

A domestic violence support group meets at 7 p.m. Tuesdays. This group is for women who are or have been victims of physical or emotional abuse.

A divorce recovery workshop is held at 7 p.m. Tuesdays. Men and women who have recently gone through divorce are welcome at the 10-week workshop.

A grief and loss workshop that meets Tuesday evenings helps people who have gone through losses such as death or divorce find healing.

Open Doors is for men and women struggling with homosexuality or same sex attraction. The group meets at 7 p.m. Tuesdays.

H.E.A.L.T.H. (Healthy Eating Always Leaning Toward Him) meets at 7 p.m. Tuesdays and is coed. Exercise is at 6 p.m.

At 7 p.m. Wednesdays, workshops in men’s and women’s anger management meet to help members understand the roots of anger and develop skills for controlling it.

A chronic pain and illness workshop meets at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays.

A support group for women who have suffered childhood abuse, rape or incest meets at 7 p.m. Wednesdays.

At 7 p.m. Thursdays is Overcomers Outreach for those seeking to overcome addictions and compulsions.

Also at 7 p.m. Thursdays is F.R.E.E.D., a recovery workshop for teenagers struggling with substance abuse.

Women’s Life meets the first and third Thursdays at 9 a.m., and MOMS meets the second and fourth Thursdays at 9:30 a.m.

Singles Invited to Concert, Dinner

The Christian Singles Connection of Camarillo plans a concert and potluck dinner June 5 at the Sonrise Christian Fellowship Church.

“We want to provide a place for singles to connect with Christ together,” said member Jennifer Coler.

Admission to the concert is free; those attending are asked to bring an appetizer or dessert to share.

Senior Pastor to Be Honored

The congregation of the United Methodist Church of Thousand Oaks will honor its senior pastor, the Rev. Terry Bushart, with a luncheon after the 10 a.m. service June 6.

After 15 years in Thousand Oaks, Bushart will take on a new post at the Riviera Methodist Church in Redondo Beach on July 1.

Some of Bushart’s local achievements include building a new sanctuary and involving the church in outreach programs.

Temple Activities for June

Ojai Church Plans Bible School

Children from kindergarten through sixth grade are welcome at Ojai Valley Community Church’s Bible school the week of June 28 through July 2 on the church grounds.

The school will offer crafts, songs, live exotic animals and refreshments, director Jan Worsham said.

“A special feature this year will be ‘I Witness News,’ a TV broadcast that presents the life of Jesus from birth to resurrection,” she said.

Day Camp Offers 2 Sessions

Camp Gan Israel, a Jewish day camp, will hold two four-week sessions this summer--from June 28 through Aug. 20.

The camp, for children ages 3 to 13, is at Heschel West Day School in Agoura-Calabasas.

Instructors in drama, music, karate, sports, crafts, Jewish heritage and swimming will be on hand.

CLU to Hold Vocation Program

Young people interested in a vocation within the Lutheran Church can explore a variety of options at the eighth annual Invitation to Service at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks on Aug. 5 to 7.

Students from late high school through college age will have a chance to explore the roles of pastor, missionary, associate in ministry, and music and youth ministries, said the Rev. Reg Schultz-Akerson of CLU, who is coordinating the event.
