France to Reply to EU Ruling on British Beef
France has indicated it will respond by Thursday to a ruling by European Union scientists that British beef is safe, said the EU’s food commissioner, David Byrne.
France has refused to join the rest of EU, which in August lifted a three-year ban on British beef exports because of fears of a brain affliction known as “mad cow” disease when it affects cattle. Britain has said it will sue unless the ban is lifted.
Prime Minister Lionel Jospin “expects to have a full review of France’s ban on British beef during this week and to present a response to that by Thursday,” Byrne said in a British Broadcasting Corp. television interview.
