At-Home Remedies Can Help With (Shhhh) Hemorrhoids

Share

Hemorrhoids are a common--and often embarrassing--problem, affecting many people.

They cause discomfort and sometimes pain, but relief is available.

What are the causes? Constipation is a major one. Sitting or standing for long periods is also a factor. Poor bowel habits can cause a problem. And many pregnant women develop hemorrhoids during pregnancy.

Your doctor, using a physical exam, medical history and possibly tests, can determine if you have the condition and develop a treatment plan for you. (Hemorrhoids usually aren’t serious, but in rare cases, surgery may be necessary.)

Symptoms you may experience include pain, itching, irritation and bleeding.

Solutions you can try at home include:

* Sitz baths (sitting for a couple of minutes in warm water) or warm compresses.

* Nonprescription pads, suppositories and creams.

* Good bowel habits (such as avoiding straining)

* A high-fiber diet, which can ease symptoms.

A high-fiber diet should include cereals, bran and whole grains, vegetables, fruits (especially apples, pears, raisins and dried apricots), and nuts and legumes (especially beans such as lentils, kidney beans and lima beans). If necessary, your doctor may also recommend an over-the-counter fiber supplement. When combined with a proper diet, regular exercise can also help prevent constipation.
