Drug Use

Share

* In regard to Barry R. McCaffrey’s Oct. 31 commentary: We are already looking at a chemically engineered class of competitors. Sadly, the rate of drug use in society has reached the point where it does jeopardize the integrity and safety of citizens. Let’s stop singling out just athletes as the group that needs these guidelines.

Let’s test 365 days a year, create an independent, accountable anti-doping agency and have no statute of limitations on illegal use of drugs, so those caught using drugs can be held accountable for their actions. However, let’s do it across the playing field, from the corporate boardrooms and government offices to the teachers’ lunchrooms.

Let’s achieve a consensus on the principle that, unless we do act now, the health and safety of all our citizens will remain at risk. Young people, through dedication, natural talent and good coaching in sports and in life, will ultimately make a difference.
