Santa Anita Names New President, CEO
* Lonny T. Powell, current president of Turf Paradise Race Course in Phoenix, has been named president and chief executive of Santa Anita Park. Powell also will be a vice president of MI Venture Inc., a newly formed subsidiary of Magna International Inc., which acquired the racetrack earlier this year.
* Veteran aerospace scientist and businessman Simon Ramo, a co-founder of the space products maker TRW Inc., received two awards this week: the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, and the 1999 National Air and Space Museum Trophy for Lifetime Achievement from the Smithsonian Institution. Ramo, the “R” in TRW, led the development of the company’s space park facility in Redondo Beach.
* Insurance law specialist James Baratta, a founding partner of the Los Angeles law firm Daniels, Baratta & Fine, is leaving the firm to join Grant, Hanley, Genovese & Baratta. In addition, three Daniels, Baratta associates--Lance Orloff, Robin Webb and Christopher Dunakin--will follow Baratta to Irvine-based Grant Hanley.
