The University of Maryland will be without two starters when it travels to top-ranked Florida State on Saturday.

Quarterback Calvin McCall and linebacker Kevin Bishop each tore knee ligaments in Saturday’s 30-17 loss at North Carolina State, Coach Ron Vanderlinden said.

Bishop, a sophomore, will need surgery and is out for the season. McCall, a redshirt freshman, will not require surgery and could return for the season finale against Virginia on Nov. 20.

McCall started all nine games this season, completing 93 of 179 passes for 1,264 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. Vanderlinden said freshman Latrez Harrison will start against Florida State. Harrison has completed one of 13 attempts this season with three interceptions.

Purdue quarterback Drew Brees, an early Heisman Trophy candidate, after Wisconsin’s Ron Dayne rushed for 222 yards Saturday against the Boilermakers to move closer to major college football’s career rushing record: “He’s great. He’s kind of been their team for the last four years. He’s going to break the NCAA record next week and had a great day today. I think he deserves the Heisman.”

Dayne moved within 99 yards of breaking the 1998 Heisman winner Ricky Williams’ year-old record of 6,279.
