Widow’s Pension

Re “Ex-Sheriff Block’s Widow Gets $233,000 Yearly Pension,” Nov. 5: The Times should call for a legislative review of the pension plan that rewards the widow of a public employee $233,000 annually. This award should be an outrage to all, especially another group of public employees, namely the teachers of our children. Where is the fairness in our public policy?

Public safety is important, but how did it happen that the L.A. County sheriff became the highest paid public official in the nation? As far as the finding that his death was job stress-related, perhaps he should have heeded medical opinion and not run for office five times. No one forced Sherman Block to stay in the office.
