Japan Approves $172-Billion Stimulus Package

TOKYO —
Japan’s government approved a massive, $172-billion spending package on Thursday, the latest in a series of stimulus measures aimed at spurring the lackluster economy.
The package, larger than the $143-billion plan analysts had predicted, is expected to push economic growth from the forecast 0.5% to 0.6% this fiscal year.
The government earmarked $70.7 billion to support small and medium-sized companies and to boost the number of small and start-up businesses by 100,000 annually by 2004, reports said.
