WASHINGTON — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers Thursday not to buy or take the diet supplement Triax Metabolic Accelerator because it contains a potent thyroid hormone that can cause heart attacks and strokes.
Triax Metabolic Accelerator is marketed by Syntrax Innovations Inc. of Cape Girardeau, Mo.
The FDA said doctors had reported on several people who used the drug and who had abnormal thyroid function tests.
“These individuals had sought medical attention because of symptoms such as severe diarrhea, fatigue, lethargy or profound weight loss,” the statement said.
The product is being sold through retail establishments and on the Internet, the FDA said.
The active ingredient in the drug is triiodothyroacetic acid (TRIAC).
The FDA said Missouri has embargoed the product at distribution houses.
