Inherited Genetic Flaw Linked to Colon Cancer

Scientists have identified an inherited genetic mutation that may make people more vulnerable to colon cancer, possibly playing a role in up to 9% of cases diagnosed each year in the United States.

If confirmed, the work might someday help doctors identify patients who should be tracked closely for early signs of the disease.

The mutation apparently promotes cancer by hindering a process that keeps cell growth under control, said Dr. Kenneth Offit of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He and colleagues present the work in today’s issue of the journal Cancer Research.
