ATM Fees

Share

Re “Tempest in an ATM,” editorial, Nov. 12: You say that cities and citizens shouldn’t legislate ATM fees. Then who should? We have been crying foul forever, and the banks, in their mighty wisdom, have ignored us.

It’s not feasible or realistic for you to tell us to take our business elsewhere. In most cases you are talking about very modest account balances, and charges of $3 on a $20 withdrawal are excessive no matter how you slice it. What do you suggest we do to bring the banking industry back to reality?

My 14-year-old son wants to know how popular TV game shows like “Greed” and “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” can afford the big payouts to contestants who win. And I replied, “Son, for promotional consideration and use of their ATMs, Bank of America and Wells Fargo are the generous cash cows that provide truth in lending and freedom to become wealthy beyond your wildest dreams!”

Replied my son, “Is that your final answer, Dad, the beauty of capitalism?” Of course it is.
