ROSTER

DAVID BLUTHENTHAL (Forward)

No. 34, 6-7, 220, Sophomore

His 30-point, 14-rebound performance in an exhibition against the California All-Stars solidified his starting spot. To keep it, the former Westchester High standout must improve on the 2.1 points and 1.8 rebounds he averaged as a reserve in 20 games last season.

KONSTANTINOS CHARISSIS (Center)

No. 15, 6-11, 250, Freshman

Coach Henry Bibby wants to convert the Athens (Greece) native from the perimeter player he was in Europe to an inside, post-up player. “In other years we would probably redshirt him,” Bibby said. “I hope we don’t have to depend heavily on him to make an impact.”

SAM CLANCY (Forward)

No. 50, 6-7, 240, Sophomore

Clancy ended a promising freshman season as the Pac-10’s leading shot blocker last season (1.4) and the team’s No. 3 rebounder (5.3). He will be asked to do much of the dirty work inside again, playing defense against power forwards and grabbing rebounds. He will get his points when he can.

BRANDON GRANVILLE (Guard)

No. 5, 5-9, 175, Sophomore

Granville was third in the conference in assists (5.0) while learning the college game in a hurry. He returns a more confident player and the team’s undisputed floor leader. Needs to cut down on turnovers--eight in the NIT loss to Wyoming--and must be enough of a three-point threat to keep defenses from zoning the Trojans to death.

NATE HAIR (Guard)

No. 1, 6-3, 195, Freshman

Hair’s Trojan debut will be delayed while he recovers from a stress fracture in his lower left leg. In his senior year at Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley, Hair averaged 15 points and five rebounds.

RASHAD JONES (Guard)

No. 20, 6-2, 195, Junior

Jones transfers in from San Jose City College, where he averaged 15.7 points, six assists and 3.1 steals last season. He is expected to back up Granville at point guard.

LUKE MINOR (Center)

No. 30, 7-3, 320, Freshman

A huge project in every sense of the phrase. Minor is the biggest player ever recruited at USC for basketball, but Bibby and staff plan to redshirt him. At Virginia’s Blue Ridge Academy, Minor averaged 7.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and three blocks last season.

BRIAN SCALABRINE (Forward-Center)

No. 24, 6-9, 250, Junior

The Trojans’ best returning player. Scalabrine was the Pac-10’s 1999 newcomer of the year, averaging a team-high 14.6 points and 6.4 rebounds. He was the only player to start all 28 games, and the only Pac-10 player to finish in the top 10 in scoring, blocked shots and free-throw percentage.

MALACHI THURSTON (Guard)

No. 3, 6-4, 200, Freshman

A shooting guard who averaged 28 points a game at Marin Academy in San Rafael, Calif., Thurston will get limited playing time behind Granville, Jones and Jeff Trepagnier.

JEFF TREPAGNIER (Guard)

No. 12, 6-4, 195, Junior

The team’s most gifted athlete, Trepagnier would like to be known for something besides highlight-film dunks. He is versatile enough to play shooting guard and small forward. Averaged 8.6 points and 4.4 rebounds last season. The Trojans need those numbers to grow this season.

JARVIS TURNER (Forward)

No. 21, 6-8, 240, Senior

Turner inherits the sixth-man role in his final Trojan season. “I think Jarvis can come in and adapt to what we need on the basketball floor,” Bibby said. “He’s an older player, he won’t get as frustrated as much as a younger player by not starting.” Averaged seven points and 3.9 rebounds last season.
