American men paid 300 million visits to doctor’s offices in 1996, the most recent year for which numbers are available. And they racked up 42 million visits to the emergency room.

* Number of annual hospital outpatient department visits: 26 million
* Number of hospital discharges (inpatients): 12.1 million
* Number of surgical procedures performed: 16 million
* Leading cause of death (overall): heart disease
* Leading cause of death (ages 25 to 44): accidents and their adverse effects
* Number of deaths from prostate cancer: 34,123
