Connecticut Gets Past Iowa

The Connecticut women did a lot better against Iowa than the men did. Tamika Williams scored 18 points and Shea Ralph had 15 as No. 1 Connecticut, opening a season filled with huge expectations, pulled away in the second half to beat Iowa, 73-45, Sunday at Iowa City. The Connecticut men were ranked No. 1 when they lost to Iowa, 70-68, in their opener. The women never trailed in beating an Iowa team that missed its first 20 shots.

No. 3 Georgia 78, No. 20 Boston College 70--Tawana McDonald scored 22 points on 11 of 14 shooting as the Bulldogs beat the Eagles at Champaign, Ill., in the preseason NIT semifinals. Georgia (3-0) will face UC Santa Barbara tonight in the final.

Stanford 95, No. 6 Iowa State 82--Bethany Donaphin had a career-high 26 points and Lauren St. Clair made four of her five three-point shots in the second half as the Cardinal (2-0) upset the Cyclones (1-1) at Palo Alto.

No. 9 North Carolina State 75, North Carolina Greensboro 58--Freshman Kaayla Chones had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Wolfpack (3-0) over the Spartans (1-2) in the championship game of the N.C. State tournament at Raleigh, N.C.

No. 12 Auburn 93, Jacksonville State 54--Tasha Hamilton and LaRita Spencer scored 15 points each, leading the Tigers over the Jaguars at Auburn, Ala.

No. 15 UC Santa Barbara 71, No. 13 Illinois 61--The Gauchos (3-0) scored the game’s first 15 points and went on to beat the Illini to advance to the championship game of the preseason NIT at Champaign, Ill., against Georgia. Erin Buescher scored 21 points and Kristi Rohr had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Santa Barbara against Illinois, which shot only 31%.

No. 17 Oregon 66, Western Kentucky 59--Jamie Craighead was four for five on three-point shots and scored 14 points as the Ducks beat the Lady Toppers at Eugene, Ore.

No. 21 Purdue 63, Vanderbilt 51--Katie Douglas scored 24 points to help the Boilermakers (2-0) overcome a 14-point first-half deficit and beat the Commodores (1-1) at West Lafayette, Ind.

Wisconsin 92, No. 24 Nebraska 85--Jessie Stomski scored 24 points, including six in overtime, and had 14 rebounds to lead the Badgers (2-0) past the Cornhuskers at Lincoln, Neb.
