Mexican Laws

* Re “Mexico Defends Handling of Crash,” Nov. 10:
Albeit a tragedy, the fatal crash involving American tourists in Mexico, including two from Orange County, should serve as a rude awakening to most Americans: The whole world does not operate under the American legal system.
Just as any foreigner entering U.S. territory should know the basics of this country’s laws, so should any American traveling to another country learn the basics of that country’s jurisprudence.
To accuse Mexico of being corrupt for the mere fact of having different laws is egocentric and chauvinistic.
It is time for Americans to realize that, despite its “party town” stereotype, Mexico also has rules that deal with illegal behavior, such as driving under the influence of alcohol, and that these laws might be drastically different from those of the United States.
