India Election Violence Leaves 10 Dead in 2 Days
Five police officers were killed, allegedly by tribal separatists, at a polling station in northeastern Assam state as India began voting today in the fifth and final phase of a marathon monthlong federal election.
The shootings came on the heels of an attack that killed at least five people, four of them security personnel, in an ambush by suspected militants in the state on Saturday.
A police officer who asked not to be identified said heavily armed gunmen fired indiscriminately using automatic weapons at a polling station at Hatchera today.
The attackers are suspected members of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), the officer added. The site of the attack is 80 miles west from the state capital Dispur.
ULFA, fighting for an independent Assamese country, has vowed to defy the poll and threatened bloodshed.
