Combat Anniversary

Share

The second week of October 1943 is little known in the history of World War II. It is officially known as Black Week because of the heavy losses sustained by members of the 8th Air Force during fierce combat engagements and missions over enemy territory.

The towns of Regensburg, Schweinfurt and Munster will forever be indelibly implanted in the memories of those who lived through this period. More than 180 aircraft were lost on these pivotal missions; 1,800 men were either killed or taken prisoner.

As time takes its toll on members of our generation, it is fitting to occasionally be reminded that the freedom we take for granted was earned by sacrifice and dedication to country.
