Albanian-Serb Clash Kills 1; Dozens Hurt
Ethnic Albanian mourners stoned a Russian-escorted Serbian convoy in northern Kosovo, killing one Serb and injuring peacekeepers. Seventeen Serbs were also injured, the Beta news agency reported. The rioting in the city of Kosovska Mitrovica began when mourners spotted the Serbs after a funeral to rebury the remains of 20 ethnic Albanians exhumed from a mass grave. At least 13 French police were injured, including their Kosovo commander, Col. Claude Vicaire, according to a French military spokesman. Peacekeepers entered Kosovo--a province of Serbia, the main Yugoslav republic--in June, after an 11-week air war by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to end a Serbian “ethnic cleansing” campaign against Albanians.
