Hackett Sticking With His Kickers

Share

USC isn’t the only team with kicking concerns. Arizona has it worse: Mark McDonald is 0 for 6 on field-goal attempts.

USC Coach Paul Hackett said Thursday he’ll stick with kicker David Newbury and punter Mike MacGillivray for now even though backup David Bell has worked at both positions this week.

“What I don’t want to do is make a change and be wrong and then make a change back,” Hackett said.

“I’m going to be patient, because if we have to make a change, I don’t want to do it twice.”

The Trojans are concerned about temperatures in the 90s for Saturday afternoon’s game in Tucson, and trainers and coaches are harping on the players to drink plenty of fluids.

Hackett is looking for an edge even in the color of the jerseys the Trojans will wear.

“Wait, isn’t white cooler?” he said, laughing. “They’ll be playing in the darker jerseys.”

Receiver Windrell Hayes, set to return Saturday after sitting out two games because of a sprained ankle, was expected to rest Thursday but instead had another strong practice.

Backup safety DeShaun Hill won’t make the trip because of a sore back.
