The world leader of the Anglican Communion rejects the common view that diversity is “the defining characteristic of Anglicanism.”

In a major address, Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey said, “We do not live by the principle, ‘Anything goes.’ I, and I guess most of us, do not accept that there are no cardinal doctrines, beliefs or limits to orthodoxy.”

Carey’s comments, at the worldwide Anglican Consultative Council in Dundee, Scotland, were reported by the Anglican Communion News Service. The council includes clergy and lay delegates from each independent national branch of Anglicanism, including America’s Episcopal Church.
