Grand jurors investigating the slaying of child beauty pageant winner JonBenet Ramsey will reconvene today after finishing their session Tuesday without taking action, officials said.

The grand jury of eight women and four men has an Oct. 20 deadline to complete deliberations but is widely expected to make a decision this week.

The grand jury has been meeting since September 1998. Its term was extended in April.

Forensic specialist Dr. Henry Lee met with prosecutors over the weekend to discuss the evidence. Published reports have said there is a problem with the DNA evidence because unidentified DNA was found on the child’s underwear. Such a missing link would be key in any defense strategy.

JonBenet’s body was found Dec. 26, 1996, in the basement of her family’s home seven hours after her mother said she found a ransom note.

The grand jury can opt to indict, not to indict, write a report on its view of the case, or do nothing.

If it does not indict, the case remains active because there is no statute of limitation on murder.
