More than 200 disabled athletes are expected to participate today in the Special Fun Games, a daylong event held every year in Belvedere Park.

The 14th annual event, sponsored by the East Los Angeles Remarkable Citizens Assn. and the county Department of Parks and Recreation, is free and open to the public.

The day includes relay races, ball tossing, art projects and entertainment.

“This is a very special day for our athletes,” said founder Elena Valencia, regional director of the Volunteer Center of Los Angeles.

“Many of our participants, due to physical and developmental limitations, don’t have the chance to participate in athletic events and win medals.”

Volunteers for the event, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., can register at the park.
