Environmental hazards in the home will be the subject of a conference Thursday and Friday at the Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles.

Titled “Unhealthy Homes Are Scary Places for Children: Addressing Environmental Hazard Reduction--Lead, Asbestos and Molds,” the conference is designed for property owners and managers, contractors, environmental consultants, health professionals and advocates.

The conference is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program and the Community Health Advisory Council.

The purposes of the conference are to draw attention to environmental home health hazards and to make owners and contractors aware of resources available to help solve problems when hazards are identified or when remodeling, especially older buildings.

“Eight out of every 10 homes in Los Angeles was built before 1978, when the use of indoor lead-based paint was discontinued,” said Eleanor Long, health education manager for the L.A. County Health Department’s Lead Poisoning Prevention Program.

A registration fee of $125 covers both days and includes continental breakfasts and lunches. Registration and breakfast start at 7 a.m. Thursday and 7:30 a.m. Friday. Conference sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. each day, with exhibits and other events available into the early evening.
