The Federal Bureau of Investigation said Wednesday it was warning local police about the danger of apocalyptic violence by white supremacist groups spurred by the dawn of 2000.

In a statement, the FBI said it had wrapped up Project Megiddo, a study of potential crimes “by individuals or domestic groups who attach special significance to the year 2000.”

The study highlights the dangers of fringe white supremacists “who seek to initiate a race war,” it said. It was being distributed to law enforcement personnel nationwide.

The project was named for the ancient battleground in Israel associated with Armageddon, the biblical scene of a battle between the forces of good and evil, prophesied to occur at the end of the world.

“The report is intended to . . . [warn] of the unique challenges that may be presented by extremists motivated by millennial agendas,” the FBI said.

The report also cited a Year 2000-related threat from those who fear the United Nations “will initiate an armed takeover of the United States.”
