Robin Williams: Overrated Celebrity or Rare Genius?

Share

If I had a people zapper, I’d zap Robin Williams along with every other overrated celebrity who won’t go away (“A Warm-Up Act,” by Paul Brownfield, Sept. 19).

Has no one noticed that Williams plays the same character in every movie? His act hasn’t changed one iota since “Mork and Mindy.” To call Williams a genius is an insult to the true geniuses of the arts. He is nothing more than a bargain basement copy of the truly funny Jonathan Winters, who created Williams’ style of comedy.

How lucky we are to be able to enjoy someone as rare and creative as Williams. In the vast sea of the ordinary and predictable, he is an island of originality.

Williams has done some great work since his “Popeye” era. Why write an article that is 90% negative about one of the few gen-iuses in our midst?

If the guy is that bad, why do all of us non-Hollywooders love him so much, and why do we pay him $20 million just to be himself on screen?

*I can live with self-righteous, elitist entertainment “experts” droning on about how there is something sinister whenever a talented person goes from “scathing satire” to a mainstream movie career. But when the person who handles Adam Sandler’s career makes disparaging remarks about Williams’ films, well . . . .

God bless our Hollywood community. No sooner do you get to the top than someone is waiting in line to chop you down. I’m sure any of the comedians who have accused Williams of stealing material or coasting would have jumped at the chance for a role in one of his big-money films.
