USC, UCLA Play Game of How Low Can They Go?

Share

After USC smoked Hawaii, 62-7, in the season opener, it was pretty apparent one of these teams was headed for a bowl game. Little did we know it would probably be Hawaii.

Mike Garrett and Paul Hackett should take a quick walk across the roadway from Heritage Hall to the ROTC building. Perhaps having both of them sit through “Leadership 101” will teach them accountability, honor and leadership by example.

Mike Garrett, Paul Hackett and Henry Bibby think they will be around when the new on-campus arena is built? President Sample will have to overhaul the athletic department from top to bottom to ensure that USC does not become the University of Sad Complacency in the 21st century.

Seems I’ve heard this before. Circa 1992, when the media and the alumni ran Larry Smith out of town because he wasn’t up to the standard of Howard Jones and John McKay, among others.

Now Hackett is on the hot seat because he isn’t Knute Rockne. I seem to recall that Hackett was not the first choice and that others declined to be put in the situation of instant Rockne, Bear Bryant or else.

For SC boosters to be frustrated is understandable. However, maintenance of these ludicrous comparisons will guarantee more of the same.

The most exhilarating sight for a Pac-10 football coach, then and now.

Then: Glancing at the scoreboard to find that you’re 21 points ahead of an SC team coached by John McKay.

Now: Glancing at the scoreboard to find that you’re 21 points behind an SC team coached by Paul Hackett.
