New Immigrants

Share

While we all applaud the achievements of immigrants like those mentioned in “The New Ethnic Entrepreneurs” by Joel Kotkin (Opinion, Sept. 12), his is only half the story. I am an English as a second language instructor at the Lodi Adult School. For over 10 years, I have worked with immigrants whose life in the U.S. has been a struggle. Some, illiterate in their own language, are unable to learn English. Despite job training, many are unemployable. Their children are behind in school.

My colleagues in the Lodi Unified School District work tirelessly to make immigrant lives in America successful. The hard truth is that we have so many people to help, we cannot keep up.
