As Always, Fashion Forecasts Bring a Mixed Response

Share

The “Fashion’s New Frontier” Special Millennium Issue (Aug. 22) was absolutely stunning. In “Forward Looking,” the models, clothes, wigs, boots and, especially, the background settings were startlingly different and fascinating.

What first caught my attention was the indoor shot in the old, run-down coffee shop. I immediately wondered whether that was one of the caffeine emporiums around town that I was familiar with. It took your commentary and a little detective work to determine where the photographs were taken.

This magazine is one I’d like to save for myself, but, alas, it will be going to my daughter--owner and operator of an Oakland firm engaged in finding just such sites for fashion photography, video shoots and such. I hope she enjoys this issue as much as I did.

I’m sorry to be rude--but on second thought, no, I’m not. Is it my imagination or is there something really strange going on in what is supposed to be the world of fashion? If the powers that be are trying to be insulting and unpleasant, they are succeeding very well.

For me, the insult started Aug. 15 with the photographs of ridiculous clothing for children (“Back to School Cool,” SoCal Style/ Fashion). Where, pray tell, could or would a child wear such horrendous garb? Certainly not at school.

Haven’t we learned from the JonBenet Ramsey tragedy not to adult-ize clothing for children?

It appears that you and your staff have forgotten that Los Angeles is a culturally diverse community. I was appalled by the selection of models for the Aug. 22 fashion layout. I guess your target audience consists of pale blonds with blue eyes. As a person of color, I was definitely turned off by the models.
