Former UCLA Chancellor Charles E. Young is in contention to be named interim president at the University of Florida.

The 67-year-old Young--who retired from UCLA in 1997 after 34 years at the helm of the Westwood campus--is scheduled to meet today with Florida State University System Chancellor Adam Herbert, a school spokesman said.

“He’s one of several candidates the chancellor is considering,” said spokesman Keith Goldschmidt.

The current president, John Lombardi, steps down Nov. 1.

The Board of Regents is holding an emergency meeting by phone Thursday to vote on an interim president at the University of South Florida, and Goldschmidt said it is possible that Herbert could also ask the regents to approve an interim University of Florida president.

Florida Chancellor Emeritus E.T. York, who has been helping Herbert with the search, said Tuesday that Young is a “top prospect” for the job and was touring the Gainesville campus Tuesday.
